My most important list

I like lists. Actually, without lying, I’m even gonna take it so far to say that I love them! My phone is full of different lists, all from To do-lists, ideas, bad jokes, books I want to read, my cold bath record, my favorite words (we all have one, right?), training goals, potential T-shirt prints and a Bucket list, just to name a few.

One of the most important lists I have tho, I call “Who I am and how I want to be”. It’s a list with, let’s say guidelines, for what I find important to me, to be the person I want to be and how I want to live to have a purpose in life. This list will never be finished. As life goes on I change and so does my view of what is important for me. I look at this list from time to time to see if I follow my own guidelines and if I don’t I ask myself if this is still important for me or if I should change it to something else. When I notice I change in a direction I don’t want to take I can look back at my list to get on the right path again. Right now this list consist of 10 headlines which I’m gonna share with you.

  1. Believe in and work for a greater purpose

This reminds me that there are so many things in this world that are way bigger than me. It reminds me to stand for and work for my values and beliefs. This includes to preserve the environment, to protect animals and to help people that are less fortunate than me. Finally this reminds me to appreciate what I have and to live as simple and ethical as I can.

2. Be honest to myself and the people I meet

This reminds me to be honest with my thoughts and feelings. This also helps me to look at myself from an objective perspective. Am I really doing what I say I’m doing? What advice would I give to myself if I was another person? It reminds me to be honest to the people around me. To commend them when they do something good and to tell them they can do better when I know they can. Finally it also reminds me to take my time to answer, to think about what I want to say, how I want to say it and if I should really say it at all. Just because something needs to be said it doesn’t mean it needs to be heard.

3. Share what I know

This reminds me to share my own experiences and knowledge. By this I hope I can inspire others to find and create the life that they want to have. Inspire others do dare and to try. Inspire others to a healthier lifestyle of movement.

4. Prioritize what’s good for me

This reminds me to to more of what I know makes me feel better. Small as well as big things. To read, put away the phone, have a morning routine, smile and laugh, play guitar, meditation, cold bath, move every day, sleep, be in nature, take care of my body to make it strong, flexible and pain free now and forever, be grateful for the little things and finally sometimes just take time to be, without feeling the need of being productive. Because first I need to take care of myself, then I can take care of others.

5. Be the friend I want to have

This reminds me to take time for other people. Both friends, family and people I do not yet know. Not just when I just happen to have some time over, but to actually take time for them. To listen to what they have to say, to put away my phone and focus on what they are saying, remember things they say and remind them of it and show an interest in their life. This also reminds me to think before how my actions and words can affect others, to try to understand their feelings and not just see it from my perspective. By this I hope to be a that person that is always there for my friends when they need someone.

6. Embrace challenges and hardship

This reminds me to consciously do things that scares and challenges me. To do things on my own, to put myself in uncomfortable situations and to not get to used to comfort. By doing this I get more courage, I get more calm in difficult situations and I get more confident knowing I can handle it. It also reminds me to be more focused and effective in the moment and not try to multitask things. Whether I’m working or practice I want to focus on that efficiently without being disturbed by other things.

7. See the world with the eyes of a child

This reminds me to be curious and playful, to explore and dare to try new things just because and to not get stuck in habits that don’t benefit me. Also to question what I see and hear instead of taking it for granted.

8. Always be humble

This reminds me to not believe that I know best in every situation. To understand that there is always something more to learn, which motivates me to have an open mind. It reminds me to listen and learn from those who knows more and to assume that everyone I meet knows something that I don’t. Finally it reminds me to not think of people as idiots without first knowing the purpose of their actions.

9. Believe in people

This reminds me to trust in people. To treat them with love and compassion. To believe that all people are capable of doing good. To encourage them when they need encouragement and to support them when they need support. To believe in oneself is important, but a little help from others can be a great blessing.

10. Be nice, even when I don’t have to

This reminds me to remain calm and to be nice in every situation. Anger and frustration rarely solves any problems. It also reminds me to show my appreciation for the people I care about and that even the smallest action can have a great impact.

So why do I need a list for all of this, do I not know who I am otherwise? I know who I am and to put it to words makes it easier for me to expand my own thoughts and make it easier for myself to explain them to make it easier for myself and others to understand. To read what I once wrote is a way of reminding myself and by putting my thoughts on paper makes it easier to reflect on them and make room for new thoughts and ideas.
